Evidently not satisfied with her 39 from last week, Ketty Farrell shot a 38 today. Let me put my eyes back in their sockets. And, as with last week, not a birdie to be seen. Congrats on a great round, Ketty. There must have been a few birdies flying around the course, however, as there were 22 people, or a little more than 1/3 of the players, who scored in the 40s. Good show! Ann F.
to Ketty Farrell for posting a 39 last Wednesday. Do you know Ketty did not get one birdie in her round. She posted 5 pars and 4 bogeys. It pays to be consistent. Easy-peasy! I think that is the lowest score posted to date this season but if you scored the same or lower, let me know (I checked the likely culprits). Good job, Ketty! Ann F.
What a delightful day for golf. And in the middle of the summer, no less. And what a delightful day for the Captain's Choice luncheon. Thank you, Nancy Carman, on a wonderful restaurant selection. And evidently it was a delightful day for chip-ins as there were 8 of them today --- the most of any Wednesday yet this year. I guess everyone is warmed up now that we have passed the halfway mark of the season. Good job, all. Ann F.
The Lovin' Spoonful had it right. It was hot today and it is summer. 48 brave souls ventured out in the heat and, as far as I know, 48 came back. This has got to be one of the hottest Captain's Choice tourneys on record. And since no one keeps records, we will just make that claim. Good news, though. The Captain's Choice luncheon, which is next week, is in an air-conditioned restaurant. Looking forward to seeing 43 of you there. Ann F.
And the birdies I am talking about are not the crows who are getting very pushy. I am talking about golf birdies. For the last two weeks, we have had only 1 birdie each week. I was beginning to wonder about you all. But today we came roaring back with 5 birdies. Guess which hole is our favorite? That's right -- #7. We deposited 30% of our birdies there. Holes 1, 2, 4, 5, and 8 have only been birdied once this year.
Now for the tip. If you haven't done so already, why not put one of those sticky address labels on each of your golf clubs. That way if you leave a club behind, it can more easily find its way back to you.
Do you ever wonder when someone moves herself out of your group in Sign Up Genius whether she did that because you were in that group? You don't? Well, neither do I. I was just asking.
Hope we all have a happy and safe Independence Day! Ann F.
The crows were busy today. On the 5th hole, Margaret McMichael reached to get her crackers and couldn't find them. She looked up in the trees and, sure enough, this big old crow had taken them. He had the pack of crackers in his mouth and was smoking a cigarette. We have no idea when he went into Margaret's bag. And then I just learned that this big old crow took Kathy Moore's bag of martini tees. Will they stop at nothing?! What -- or who -- is next? We might have to start wearing helmets instead of visors when we play. So, if you are missing something and can't figure out where it went, maybe the crows have it? Ann F.
Is it heresy to admit that I am a fair weather golfer? Despite that, I ventured out today along with 43 others. It wasn't as bad underfoot as I expected but the air was heavy. I think my foursome had at least 3 shots that would have been holes-in-one but they got hung up in the upper atmosphere and fell short. At least the sun stayed in for the most part. And only one birdie today -- good job, Marilyn! Ann F.
This dispatch is a day late for no reason other than sloth. My sloth is not news but the big news is that "we" have birdied all holes this year. "We" accomplished this on May 15. I think in a normal year we are approaching the end of the season before we reach this goal. And I bet some years we never accomplish the goal of making at least one birdie on every hole. This is truly a feat to do this so early in the season. Congratulations to us all!
Hope to see you next week at Crazy 9s and the BBQ.
Of course we wouldn't hold a coronation this early in the season but, if we did, Ruth Coakley would wear the crown. Ruth has had 5 chip-ins already this year. Four of Ruth's chip-ins have happened in consecutive weeks in May (with 2 last week). Her favorite hole is #7. Hot on Ruth's heels is Mannie Banerjee who has 3 chip-ins so far. Tell us your secret, ladies.
And what a crowd we had today -- 83 of us. This is the 3rd time this year that attendance has been at 80 or above. Wow! Do you think we can hit 90? Looking forward to seeing everyone next week.
A glorious day for golf. It was a little chilly at first but that's when we send out our toughest golfers so it wasn't a problem.
I chuckled reading the sign-up sheets this week and seeing a foursome of Carol, Carole, Carolyn, and Cathy. That started me thinking -- always a dangerous thing -- why not a contest of the Marys vs the Pats? Or the Debbies vs the Carols? Hmmm...I will need to go into my laboratory and perfect this idea.
And in the world of golf, Jeanne Baker got a birdie on Hole 1. Now that is a rare occurrence -- not for Jeanne to get a birdie but for anyone to get a birdie on Hole 1. Congrats, Jeanne.
